About the Trucking Management Conference:

MTA’s 2018 Trucking Management Conference: Drivers, Operations, and Increasing Profitability is designed for top-level managers, middle managers, and trucking professionals who wear multiple hats in running their company or a division of their company.  The major management disciplines of operations, purchasing, human resources, recruitment, and strategy are covered in this one day conference.  Trucking management professionals will receive cutting edge strategies, resources, and inspiration to enhance their hands-on operational and management skills.

7:00-8:00 a.m.- Registration, continental breakfast and networking

8:00-8:10 a.m.- Welcome and opening remarks- John Hausladen, President, MTA and Mike Manning, TMC conference chair

8:10-9:15 a.m.- Session 1: Managing All Your Assets to Optimize Profitability - Keith Klein, former President, Transport America

Keith Klein will teach you how to optimize your company’s profitability by pulling together and managing all of your company assets – both physical and human – and “set the table” for more in-depth learning throughout the day.   Keith Klein knows the trucking industry inside and out, having served in various executive positions for 18+ years with Transport America until his retirement as President in October of 2017.  He currently owns a consulting firm called K Klein Ventures LLC, and serves on the Board of Directors of Total Logistics, Inc.  Keith also is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management.

9:30-10:30 a.m.- Session 2: New Driver Prospects- Understanding Them, Knowing What They are Looking For and How to Reach Them- Wendy Bartz- Director or Recruitment- DART

Wendy Bartz will focus on how to leverage digital marketing and other tools to find, understand, and ultimately hire new drivers.  Wendy Bartz has over 20 years of trucking industry recruitment experience.  She is the Director of Recruitment at Dart Transport and has held similar positions at Bay and Bay and Rohel Transport.  She is a well-respected industry professional who knows driver recruitment.

10:45-11:30 a.m.- Session 3: Avoiding Driver Pain Points and Keeping Drivers Happy - Scott Barker, Former Vice President Driver Engagement, Swift Transportation

Part speaker, part humorist, Scott Barker will leave you in stitches learning how to anticipate and avoid driver pain points to keep your drivers happy and part of the team.  Scott Barker has spent over 40 years in the transportation industry and truly knows what it takes to keep drivers happy and safe.  Prior to his 10 years with Swift working in driver recruitment, driver training, driver engagement and safety, Scott worked for UPS for almost 28 years, starting as a Package Delivery Driver and then advancing into Human Resources, Operations, and Health and Safety.

1:00-1:45 p.m.- Session 4: Understanding the Data You Already Have and Its Impact on Your Business- James Langley, President, Dart Transit  and  Tim Leonard, Chief Technology Officer, Trimble Transportation

James Langley will show you benchmarking techniques to leverage your collected data, and discuss the impact of technology on the driver and profitability.

James Langley has over 26 years of transportation experience, including 14 years of logistics engineering, operations, and over 12 years of executive management.  Recently, he was named the President of the following Dart Network companies: Dart Holding Company, Highway Sales, and Logistics. Prior to Dart, James worked at J.B. Hunt, U.S. Xpress, and TMW.  He has a B.S.B.A. in Transportation & Logistics from the University of Arkansas.

As CTO for Trimble Transportation, Mr. Timothy Leonard is responsible for creating the technology and road map for Trimble Transportation’s continued success. His expertise in delivery and implementation of mechanisms to identify, control and track changes during project rollouts across functional teams has helped to establish Trimble as a leader in the industry. 

Leonard is a former Executive at General Motors, and CTO and VP of Information Management at US Xpress Inc, with over 27 years’ experience in configuration management planning for Information Management Systems, Operational Data Stores and Order Entry Systems.

He has written procedures on the effectives of formalized methodologies for managing change requests to re-baseline technology and business initiatives.  A “patent holder” for Internet Order Entry System, Leonard has published several articles on effective collaboration techniques using his practical experience in all phases of project life cycle, from product inception and maturity through steady-state rollout, to cohesive integration into mainstream quote through cash systems. In 2012, he offered his analytical expertise as a contributor to Secrets of Analytical Leaders: Insights from Information Insiders, a book that illuminates analytical best practices for the modern age. 

Leonard has spearheaded and deployed proven methods at Fortune 10,100 and 500 companies to identify, track and evaluate the implication of changes through statistical configuration synthesis and measurements across initiation and release cycles of enterprise solutions. His methods, which are proven by empirical evidence, have effectively converged the optimum balance of delivering business solutions through efficient and enabling IT assets.

2:00-2:45 p.m.- Session 5: Making Purchasing Decisions with Today's Needs and Future Automation in Mind- Panel

Representatives from Anderson Trucking, Q Carriers, and Bay & Bay Transportation will discuss on how to make purchasing equipment decisions NOW with awareness of the evolving driver-assist and automation technologies available in the future.  

 2:45-3:00 p.m.- BREAK

3:00-3:45 p.m.- Session 6- Leading Your Team Through Change- Kyle Kottke, General Manager, Kottke Trucking

Kyle Kottke will show you how to build confidence in your employees during times of change.  True business leaders understand the human side of management and that in times of great change and growth, companies need strong and compassionate executive leadership to “set thetone,” so that employees can successfully embrace and leverage change for greater profitability.  Kyle Kottke is the General Manager of Kottke Trucking, an 80-year old family owned trucking company.  Kyle is skilled in negotiation, operations management, freight operations and financial analysis.
