MTA to StarTribune: Support Long-Term Solutions

When the StarTribune Editorial Board contacted the MTA for its opinion regarding the proposed fuel tax holiday, the answer was clear: the real key is to find fundamental long-term solutions to high fuel prices. Expansion of domestic oil drilling and refining capacity, mixed with some restrictions on speculating in the commodity market, are fundamental to achieving economically viable fuel prices. There is no question that from a cash-flow perspective, trucking companies would benefit significantly in the short-run from reduced fuel costs, but such a move does nothing to guarantee necessary structural changes in the system.
