Effective January 1, 2014, forty-seven Minnesota counties will collect a $10 wheeleage tax.  The tax is determined by where the vehicle is ordinarily stored or parked during non-business hours or when not in use. If the vehicle is ordinarily stored or parked outside of the county, indicate that county on the registration renewal and deduct the tax from the amount due.

Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) collects wheelage tax on behalf of these counties. The tax is due at the time of vehicle registration.  Wheelage tax funds are distributed to the appropriate county and are used for transportation needs, including highway preservation projects, expansion projects and transit improvement.

Wheelage tax does not apply to vehicles that do not require an annual registration tax. Exempt vehicles include: motorcycles, motorized bicycles, or trailers.

If the wheelage tax is paid at the time of registration and the vehicle is moved to another county, the tax is not refunded.
