FMCSA CELL PHONE BAN UPDATE
PUSH-TO-TALK PHONES

The FMCSA recently updated its guidance on the use of push-to-talk cell phones in light of the new cell phone ban.  While the rule itself has not changed, the FMCSA now states on its web site that PTT technology
IS usable, IF the phone can be operated without holding it, and with only one-touch.  The phone still has to be reachable from a normal seated position with seat belt fastened or usable through dashboard/steering wheel controls.

The FMCSA’s new guidance can be found in its FAQ’s on the cell phone ban.

It remains recommended to avoid cell phone use as much as possible while driving.  Once your company has determined a policy that works for your operation, and encourages safety, then make sure you adopt and enforce that policy on a consistent basis.  If you need any assistance with your cell phone policy please feel free to contact me.  In the meantime, be safe and be well.
